A writer of copious amounts of words (because if they didn’t come out, she’s sure her head would explode), Sue-Ellen writes everything from heart-warming romances to middle grade fantasies to picture books. A best-selling, internationally published author, she’s an eternal optimist who enjoys making things difficult for her protagonists, but loves a satisfying ending.
In her other life, she lives in Central Queensland with her family, a bordoodle called Bella and a snake called Slide. A full-time social worker and brain nerd, she counsels children to adults, and enjoys the balance created by disappearing into a good story at the end of the day (either her own or someone else’s). She loves quirky shoes, dark chocolate and a good tea.
What inspired you to be a writer?
I was writing before I could actually write, reading my scribble stories out to my parents (so patient!). Because I loved books, I naturally wanted to write my own stories and then, in grade 4, our small school out west was visited by Mem Fox! And that was it – that’s what I wanted to do. And finally, after uni and 3 kids, I got serious about it.
What prompted you to write 'Clamory: The Magic of Adeline Black'?
I tend to write from scenes that appear in my somewhat strange brain and Adeline in the pantry was the scene that first came to me. Magic, fantasy and the impossible is something I love so, of course, that’s where the story went.
Crystal caves, a magical house with trampolines and slides that can grow rooms, friendship and a mystery to solve – what’s not to love about fantasy!
Do you have any more books in the pipeline?
I have another middle grade story that I’m almost finished, an adult novella for charity that I’m in the middle of writing (the romance of Hades and Persephone, anyone?) and of course, the second Adeline story to finish.
What is your professional background?
I’m a social worker, and counsel everyone from kids to adults. Stories – especially for kids – are a big part of this.
Any advice you’d like to give aspiring writers?
Write and keep writing. Go to conferences and workshops – learn the craft and connect with other authors (we tend to be a friendly, sharing bunch!). Know that success is finishing a story you love!
And finally, just because one editor or publisher doesn’t want your story doesn’t mean that it’s not a good story. There are a lot of decisions that go into the selection so get feedback and keep going.
Who/what inspires you?
Amazing stories from other authors that draw me into their world and make me forget I’m reading; the imagination of the kids I do workshops with; talking with other authors (always helps to encourage the muse!); being in nature, especially at the beach and getting feedback from readers.
What are your hobbies, interests and favourite books?
Writing (or course!), reading, drawing, walking my dog on the beach… I could go on but that’s probably enough!
My favourite books is a hard question. Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonrider series, Harry Potter, The House Witch series, Pride and Prejudice, The Scholomance series, James and the Giant Peach, The Magic Faraway Tree, Little Women… alright, I really better stop!
