Lisa Farber is a lawyer who discovered her true passion lay in teaching. For the past 25 years, she has taught drama and public speaking to children of all ages, helping them flourish and grow in confidence.
Though Lisa has written many poems and scripts for performance, this is her very first children’s book, and she is thrilled to introduce readers to Tilly.
Lisa is married to Justin and is a proud mum of two grown children and one senior dog. She loves spending time with them at home.
Tilly Doesn't Want to Jump is coming soon.
What inspired you to be a writer?
I have always loved stories. Telling them, listening to them, reading them quietly or sharing them out aloud. I love the idea that someone can put in to words, thoughts and feelings that resonate with others. My favourite books were like spending time with special friends. I wanted to write to be a part of this magical world, where ideas become words, words become a story, and the story has the ability to touch and connect people.
What prompted you to write 'Tilly Doesn't Want to Jump'?
Tilly Doesn't Want to Jump has been brewing inside of me for some time. As a teacher I have the privilege of watching children overcome their fears and insecurities; it is both exciting and inspiring. I wanted my story to celebrate this process. Tilly Doesn’t Want to Jump is universal for any child—indeed any person—facing a challenge, reminding us of our inner bravery and our own unique power.
Do you have any more books in the pipeline?
Tilly may be having some more inspiring adventures; after all she is quite intrepid and brave!
What is your professional background?
I completed an Arts/Law Degree at Monash University, only to find that my passion lay in teaching. For the past 25 years I have taught children of all ages, inspiring a love of poetry, storytelling and theatre to enrich self-confidence and creativity in my students.
Any advice you’d like to give to aspiring writers?
Write what you know; write from the heart. If you’re feeling something, it’s likely someone else has this feeling too, so don’t be scared to share!
Who/what inspires you?
I am inspired by my own children and by the children I teach—their openness, their willingness to learn and grow, and their joy.
What are your hobbies, interests and favourite books?
I love the outdoors…walking, the beach and nature.
I love the indoors…reading, theatre and the movies.
But most important is who I do these things with; I love spending time with friends and family.
