Hawkeye Publishing is a Brisbane-based independent publisher Elevating Australia’s culture, writers, and stories.. We provide high-quality editorial support, national writing competitions, and a publishing pathway for stories that deserve to be read.
With a permanent team, and a passionate team of volunteers, we also mentor interns each semester across editing, design, publicity, and production—helping grow the next generation of publishing talent.
Founder Carolyn Martinez launched Hawkeye Publishing in 2002 and Hawkeye Books in 2019 from her garage, supported by her husband and driven by a bold vision: to create real change in the Australian publishing landscape. With a Master’s of Arts degree in writing, Carolyn saw how global monopolies and a shrinking local industry were leaving Australian talent behind.
She ran Hawkeye unpaid until July 2025, reinvesting everything to support underrepresented and emerging authors.
Now, Hawkeye offers two publishing models: traditional trade and author-assisted. Both are extremely selective and receive professional editorial, design, and distribution support—allowing us to grow sustainably while championing Australian stories.

We accept unsolicited submissions from unrepresented authors through the Hawkeye Manuscript Development Prize. Two winners are considered for trade contracts, and some finalists or long-listed applicants may be offered author-assisted contracts.
