Q&A with Author Erica Lee

What inspired you to be a writer?

Writing found me the day I realised I wasn’t alone. After reading a memoir about raising a neurodivergent child, I recognised my own journey in every page. It opened a door I didn’t know existed. I began writing that day — and it became my way of reaching back to others on the same path and saying 'you’re not alone either'.

What prompted you to write 'The Bond Between Us'?

I wrote this memoir because motherhood changed the way I understood myself. Raising two neurodivergent children has been the most challenging and life-shaping journey of my life, and I wanted to capture the reality of it — the uncertainty, the breakthroughs, and the fierce love that carries families through. I wrote this book so other parents might feel less alone, and so educators and professionals might better understand the unseen challenges families are navigating every day. Above all, it is a way of honouring my children, the lessons they have taught me, and the strength we have built together.

Do you have any more books in the pipeline?

Yes — another book is already written. I just need to gather the courage to share it with the world. And in truth, I haven’t stopped writing. There are several new projects quietly taking shape alongside it, including a children’s book series that has been a joy to create.

What is your professional background?

Professionally, I’m a Health and Physical Education teacher with a passion for inclusive education. I’ve taught hundreds of children over the years, including time working in education support, and it’s the work I’ve done with students who need a gentler, more individualised approach that has shaped me most.

Any advice you’d like to give to aspiring writers?

My advice to any new writer is this: if I can write a book, so can you. Four years ago, if someone had told me I’d be a published author, I would have laughed. You don’t need confidence, expertise, or a perfect plan — you just need a beginning. Start with one sentence, then another. Your story matters more than you think.

Who/what inspires you?

I’m inspired by the good people in this world — the kind, generous souls who choose compassion every day. And most of all, I’m inspired by my children. They teach me patience, strength, and a deeper kind of love I never knew existed.

What are your hobbies, interests and favourite books?

I’m a long-time lover of Jodi Picoult’s novels. Her stories have taught me so much about ethics, moral complexity, and the grey spaces of humanity — and, in many ways, about myself. I also love a good biography or memoir. The very first book I truly fell in love with was The Odyssey of Michael Jordan, which probably explains an early love of basketball that’s never really left me. Outside of reading and writing, I’m happiest when I’m moving — running, swimming, adventure racing, riding, or even bouncing on a trampoline with my kids. Basically, if it doesn’t involve sitting, it’s my hobby. (Sitting still long enough to write a book may have been the biggest challenge of all.)
